Being Latinx

Hi Virtually Voguers! In honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month coming to an end I wanted to take the time to talk about something very important to me, my culture. As some of you may or may not know, I was born in El Salvador and I moved to the United States when I was 1. I grew up bilingual speaking both English and Spanish, and thanks to my parents I was able to develop a close connection to my roots. I am so proud of where I come from, so this post is going to be all about my favorite parts of being Latina. Something new: the rest of this post will be written in both English and Spanish so that it can be as inclusive as possible. Enjoy!
What is Latinx?
Latinx (pronounced: Latin-X) is a gender neutral term often used in lieu of Latino or Latina that refers to individuals with cultural ties to Latin America and individuals with Latin American descent. The -x replaces the standard o/a ending of Latino and is intended to be more gender inclusive.
Que es Latinx?
Latinx (pronunciado: Latin-X) es un término neutro usado en lugar de latino o latina que se refiere a individuos con vínculos culturales con América Latina y personas con descendencia latinoamericana. La -x reemplaza la terminología o / a estándar de Latino y está destinada a ser más inclusiva de género.
Food:
There is nothing in this world like Latinx food -- some delicious carne asada tacos, a cheesy pupusa, a juicy ceviche. Gosh my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Every country has different food and I must say all of it is incredible. The tradition of cooking is shared through generations and I'm sorry to say but my grandma and mom are the most incredible cooks in the world. Can't wait to be home and get an amazing home cooked meal! Food is also a way to bond with your family and just share some laughs, I love it so much.
La Comida:
No hay nada en este mundo como la comida Latina -- unos tacos de carne asada deliciosos, unas pupusas con bastante queso, o un ceviche jugoso. Se me hace agua la boca solo imaginándome toda la comida! Cada país tiene comida diferente y todos los platos son increíbles. La tradición de cocinar es compartida de generación en generación y perdón pero tengo que decir que mi abuela y mi mama son las mejores cocineras en todo el mundo. No me aguanto por estar en casa y disfrutar de su comida. La comida es una manera de unirte con tu familia y compartir risas, me encanta.
Music:
Moving on to music, the rhythm and lyrics of songs in Spanish is unmatched. There are so many different types of dances and as far as I can remember my family has always had the best dance parties. My personal favorite is bachata, the rhythm is so romantic and it is amazing to dance to -- granted I'm not that great but it is still lots of fun. Also Latin singers are really beautiful (@Maluma 😍). Haha. And female Latinx artists are a huge inspiration for lots of people, take Selena for example who so many years after her death is still impacting the lives of many -- aka her collection with MAC which is amazing!
La Musica:
Ahora la música, el ritmo y la letra de las canciones en español es único. Hay varios tipos de bailes y desde que yo estaba pequeña me acuerdo de las fiestas de mi familia cuando todos se ponían a bailar y disfrutar. Mi estilo favorito es la bachata, el ritmo es tan romántico y es súper divertido bailarla -- aunque no soy muy buena pero todavía me gusta! También, los cantantes latinos son bien guapos (miren a Maluma) jaja. Y las artistas Latinas son una gran inspiración para mucha gente, tomen a Selena que tantos años después de su muerte sigue impactando las vidas de muchos -- incluyendo su collection de maquillaje con MAC que es lindisima!
Diversity:
Something so unique about the Latinx community is how diverse it is. There are so many "types" of Latinx around the world which means the culture is incredibly rich. It is also such a large and expansive community that at the same time has the ability to feel tight knit and supportive. Take the tragedies that happened in Mexico and the Caribbean for example, it brought so many people together to try and help those who lost everything. It was incredible to see.
La Diversidad:
Algo único de la comunidad Latinx es lo diversa que es. Hay tantos tipos de Latinx en el mundo y esto hace que la cultura sea rica y expansiva. Es una comunidad tan grande que a la vez se siente bien unida. Por ejemplo, después de las tragedia en México y el Caribe, mucha gente se unió y hicieron obras increíbles para ayudar a los que lo perdieron todo.
Family:
Now the most important thing for me, my family. I will forever be grateful for my huge Latinx family that has supported me since I took my very first step. Any chance I get to be with my extended family at a get together with my mom and aunts cooking and Spanish music blasting, is the best. My mom is the strongest person I have ever met and I look up to her like no one else -- which I think is a sentiment felt by most Latinx I've spoken to. Latinas are fierce and powerful in more ways than one. I would never want to change where I come from and the culture I represent and I hope that through my blog I can increase the representation of Latinx individuals in the media and in fashion especially. La Familia:
Ahora para lo más importante para mí, mi familia. Siempre voy a estar agradecida por mi enorme familia Latinx que me ha apoyado desde que si mi primer paso. Cualquier oportunidad que tengo para reunirme con toda mi familia extendida con mis tías y mama cocinando y música en español a todo volumen, lo hago! Mi madre es la mujer más fuerte que he conocido en mi vida y la admiro como a nadie más -- lo que es un sentimiento que varios Latinx sienten. Las latinas son poderosas y fuertes en tantas maneras. Nunca cambiaría de adonde vengo y la cultura que representó, y espero que con mi blog pueda levantar las voces de la comunidad Latinx y pedir más representación en la media y la moda!
